Lancaster Canal Spring Paddle

Thursday 28th March.

The forecast wasn’t looking great with promise of showers and wind from the SE force 4 to 6.
WhatsApp discussion on Wednesday whether we should go ahead, but people were looking for some paddling exercise prior to the Great Glen Adventure in April so the trip was on.
Thursday started with heavy rain in the N and E lakes, but 7 brave souls assembled at the large lay-by south of Carnforth. BarryC, Annette, Nicola, LynneW, SallyC, SueS and JohnS.
Unloaded and briefed by 10.00, warned of the possibility of naughty swans, fishermen and the occasional narrow boat, we headed south at 10.05 towards Lancaster.

No showers, a light breeze and the sky began to lighten. As we approached the swing bridge, the only obstacle today, the sun appeared.
John struggled to release the padlock on the bridge, until Barry pointed out it was only held in place by a bit of rope. We all glided through and continued on our way as the clouds cleared and the sun shone.

A very pleasant spring paddle, spotting the occasional heron, moorhen, merganser, and cormorant. The only swans we saw seemed pleased to see us, and slightly disappointed not to see Richard.

At the WaterWitch by 12.30 for lunch in the sunshine, coffee and sandwiches, a pleasant hour until at 1.30 we decided it was time for the return trip.

All back on the water without incident, we paddled north with a gentle breeze behind to push us onwards.

A pony standing in the canal answered Nicola’s question as to how deep the canal was.

Back at the start by 3.40pm having completed over 15 miles in 4hours 40mins.
A good workout in preparation for April adventures.
